Don’t Forget the One

Don't forget the one...

Today, after lunch, I laid my kids down for naps.  I had a long, ambitious list in my head of things that I could do while my children rested.  Matt had just got home for a late lunch and I decided to sit with him and touch base before the afternoon progressed.  My list could wait 15 minutes.

  • Creole language lesson
  • Sand down an old dresser to use for school books
  • Paint old dresser
  • Call Airline and chat about canceled tickets
  • Work on financial receipts

Ha!  Who am I kidding, there is no way that I would pull out that old dresser to work on this afternoon in this heat.

Then I heard a baby crying.  This little baby boy is so precious and has a mama that loves him dearly.  She is a neighbor, younger, and comes over to our compound about once a week to do her laundry.  Typically, someone here is Ruuska Village tries to help her out and take care of the baby, but he is usually pretty fussy and ends up crying a good deal.

My list can wait.  I run downstairs to see if I have the magic touch again and can get him calmed down.  He melts into my arms as I comfort him and in about 5 minutes he is fast asleep.  I held him for a good while and then asked his mama if I could take him up to my patio where she can still see me and let him sleep.

It may not seem like much, but it's one step in helping a strong mama care for her baby.
